WHO'S BETTER, LEBRON OR KOBE?

And the basketball debate that just won't quit:

One of my favorite sports columnists, J.A. Adande, ponders what might be an exhausting and irrelevant debate, just click the picture:

Q-Tip feat. Raphael Saadiq

This is my favorite song off Q-Tip's "The Renaissance", his long awaited follow-up to 1999's "Amplified", a fantastic record. Check out "Vivrant Thang" on youtube for a taste) A cool thing about this album is Q-tip's use of other beats or prior recordings. You may know that Kanye West and other producers have been using bits and pieces of other songs for years. What makes "The Renaissance" so interesting is the fact that Q-tip employed his own personal band to recreate the recordings in a new way, thus making the songs he produces and creates completely his own, with familiar sounds.

I post the lyrics to this song because I feel strongly that we should, as the end of this song's lyrics imply, "(Love) just a little bit more". In tandem with the sadness I feel for those embroiled in war in Iraq and wars throughout the world, is my feelings of hope and love for all people. I hope we're able to overcome all the fighting and that love will prevail.

I just love the identity verse where he's touching on the idea of being in the armed forces as a way to travel the world and find yourself and find something with which to connect, yet only finding your gun as an understanding element. Profound.

Have a great day, and I hope you (love) just a little bit more than you (fight).

We Fight/We Love ft. Raqhael Saadiq - Q--Tip

We Fight Love Lyrics

[Verse 1]
And it, and it begins, he walks outside for a cigarette break
And thinks how many cigarettes does it take
He takes a long drag with the sun in his eye
He squints, he thinks he starts to sigh
Sometimes he cry
When he think about his girlfriend on his side
She held him down, she made him better
Fought the love, through the fucked up weather
And she thinkin about her life
With no more work just being a wife
But instead her love, she gave it to a man
Who fought against her lovely plans
So when she go to work, plus go to school
Plus fight the love, she must feel like a fool
She want the ease that come after pain
She fights for love, thats her campaign
We fight, we love

Chorus: Raphael Saadiq
We fight and love so much sometimes
I get confused of who we are
Maybe if we just stop and chat a bit
We'll find out who we are
[2x]

(Fight) just a little bit
(Love) just a little bit
(Fight) just a little bit
(Love) just a little bit more

We just keep on...

(Fight) just a little bit
(Love) just a little bit
(Fight) just a little bit
(Love) just a little bit more
[2x]

[Verse 2]
And it, and it begins, he's off the ball
He left his friends, he ain't home no more
He's in a place, that's far away
Where he can't understand what they say
They say salaam, they cary bombs
In crouded places, and cause alarm
You're the infidel who's uninvited
But really an American boy who's slighted
It ain't your fault, you want identity
So you join this big fraternity
You get to travel the world, its cheaper than college
And you get guns and you get knowledge
Lookin for your soul, and WMD's
You can't find nothing, cause its empty
You got your gun, and he's your friend
And he's your man, until the end
We fight, we love

Chorus: Raphael Saadiq
We fight and love so much sometimes
I get confused of who we are
Maybe if we just stop and chat a bit
We'll find out who we are
[2x]

(Fight) just a little bit
(Love) just a little bit
(Fight) just a little bit
(Love) just a little bit more

We just keep on...

(Fight) just a little bit
(Love) just a little bit
(Fight) just a little bit
(Love) just a little bit more
[4x]

Leaving our children's world a little better than the world we inhabit today

That is a paraphrase of President-elect Barack Obama, who was quoted with saying, "Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure the world we leave our children is just a little better than the one we inhabit today."

It's an exciting time throughout the United States, and indeed throughout the world. For those of us (U.S. Citizens, and non-)who have waited impatiently for the excitement and fervor that came with President John Kennedy's 'Camelot' presidency, wait no more.

On January 20th, 2009, former Illinois State Senator Barack Obama will be named 43rd President of the United States of America. A man whose platform of change will usher in an 'era of responsibility', President Obama (can I drop the '-elect' already?) already has us thinking of the time when we will be able to chuckle at the current recession that has befallen our country, of a time when we can say 'I personally contributed to the growth and betterment of my country.'

'My country', indeed. Sweet land of liberty, of thee, I blog. I am beginning the year of 2009 with a broader undertanding of our country's political outlook. Thanks to the popularity of political shows "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report", as well as the sweeping coverage of the Nationally-blogged-about spectacle "Election 2008", we are all more involved in the process of the political commentary of our day than our parents were before us. We blog, some of us with fervor, we debate--atop soap boxes, or otherwise--and some of us even protest the perceived misdeeds of prior elected officials.

However you choose to express your involvement, I say keep it up! Whether it's through small donations of money or your time, through the good social works of volunteering, or even by frequenting your local library's political stacks, keep moving forward. Yearn for knowledge in the political process, ask the 'difficult questions' of your locally-elected public officials. Most importantly, grow within your community. Embrace your neighbors as your brothers and sisters (and yes, that cliche includes the little arguments we all have with our siblings, it's not just used to show that we must be 'buddy buddy' with everyone). Share the world you live in with the people who inhabit it.

As President Barack Obama has said, let's make it a better world for our children, and in turn, ourselves!

Very Interesting animated movie coming out.

Vimeo HD:

Check out the HD Goodness... interesting stuff.

Movies:

Watched a few movies lately: The House Bunny, The Accidental Husband, Kung Fu Panda, Strange Wilderness, The Matador.

1. The House Bunny... Bad but had funny moments.
2. The Accidental Husband, not worth my time in the least. Poor Uma Thurman, terrible script and premise.
3. Kung Fu Panda, Best movie of the night. Amazing cartoon, and amusing story... Had me laughing the entire time.
4. Strange Wilderness, another bad movie, but I watched it because I remembered a student from college writing quite a compelling media studies paper on it. I wanted to see what was so damned fascinating about it. Sadly, there was nothing. Steve Zahn just isn't trying sometimes.
5. The Matador, so far so good! Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear work well together, hahaha.

The Wire

HBO's The Wire.

Watch it, it's fantastic.

Very, very interesting cop drama based in Baltimore, Maryland. Many multi-layered 'bad' guys as well as a detailed study of the officers charged with protecting a community. Excellent acting, exemplary writing, and such effective editing you'll think each episode is a chapter in a book.

Autism:

During my youth, I encountered a young man whose autism caused quite an outcry from the parents of my fellow students. Even educators took little pains toward gathering information into his condition, and how to handle a person with his degree of autism.

Our community was not aware enough to the great turmoil and solitude experienced by Autistic Children and their families. I remember thinking how ignorant everyone seemed to be about what this young man was going through. There was never once a question of what his autism actually meant; nor was any sympathy ever shown to his parents, specifically his mother, who advocated so strongly for his cause--a fair and equal education--that she went back to school and earned multiple master's degrees to provide him adequate advocacy.

As I have gone through the years, I've kept in touch with this young man, and he is a treasure, a miracle. For someone with his degree of autism, his communication skills are a blessing. He also has various interests that drive his daily activities. He carries a full-time job and owns his home. He still has a worker who lives with him and handles many of the mundane things we take for granted. My only issue, though, is the lack of information people have regarding this 'spectrum disorder'.

I'm providing a link to Autism Society of America, and I hope that you take a chance to look over the 'About Autism' and 'Life With Autism' Tabs... and perhaps find it in your heart to provide a small donation to assist the research for understanding the disorder.

Be The Change Inc.

My mother's ancestors are from Israel, and she currently has cousins who still reside there. Though we've never visited them, our cousins have always kept in touch--writing letters, and sending gifts commemorating our births.

Recently, my cousin Dorit was married and we received pictures and an update of the special event. Despite the happiness, Dorit was sad to inform us that the battle between Israel and the Gaza strip has caused quite an unsettling unrest within her parents' hometown. This is very scary for my mother and I hope and pray that the actions causing duress to that country don't physically harm my extended family. I am so saddened when I heard about Israel bombing Gaza and of any retaliatory activities against Israel.

It's tragic. I can't get past the killings, and I am compelled to note that lives lost for religious zealotry leaves me baffled and confused.

This led me to posting today's blog, asking you to be aware of your surroundings, your actions, and the events that move you on a daily basis. Take the time to help someone, the smallest tasks leave the largest impressions. I truly believe that. Work toward bettering yourself, if for nothing else than to leave this world a better place than when you entered.

The Be The Change, inc. Movement is a huge undertaking of strength, brotherhood, and awareness... and it's something that I vibe with. Check the link for more information.

We must love each other and 'be the change we wish to see in the world'.
